Feelfree Gear supported Skipper retires from Trans-Atlantic race after mid-ocean collision with shipping container.

Sad news for is just reaching us that Feelfree Gear supported athlete Yvan Bourgnon and his fellow skipper Gilles Lamire have crashed out of the 2015 Transat Jacques Vabres transatlantic yacht race.

The Transat Jacques Vabres follows the historic coffee trading route between Northern France and Brazil and takes place every 2 years with the fastest boats taking just over 3 weeks for the non-stop crossing.

Yvan is a previous winner in the multihull class and was lying in 4th place looking for a high finish when their trimaran, La French Tech Rennes Saint-Malo Racing, collided with a semi-submerged shipping container causing irreparably damaged to one pontoon of their yacht.

The big challenge now is for Yvan and Gilles to get their crippled trimaran back to safe havens. A damaged steering system means they’re at the mercy of wind and current but thankfully current conditions should propel them towards either Western Ireland or Northern France without needing external help. Good luck and safe winds guys.
